Originally airline reservations systems were just for airline inventory and known as CRS or Computer Reservation Systems. Today these systems have been expanded to be booking systems for a range of industry product including hotel accommodation, car rental vehicles and other tourism products including airline ticketing and they are known as Global Distribution Systems or GDS. A GDS is also required to handle check-in procedures at airports and these are known as Departure Control Systems.
Effective use of a GDS is the key skill of travel industry employees in businesses where reservations and ticketing for travel products are made and check-in airport procedures are followed.
Worldwide as well as in Australia and New Zealand, Amadeus, Sabre and Galileo systems are used daily by airlines not only for reservations and ticketing but also for airport check-in. Travel agencies and tour companies also handle clients using these systems.
